Its metadata file, Lightseed.json , holds everything a solver needs in public: the modulus n, a SHA-512 fingerprint of one of its prime factors, the key-derivation parameters, the encrypted payload and a hash of that payload so anyone can prove they hold the genuine artifact. Nothing is hidden except the two primes and, behind them, the message. The intent is diplomacy across time. Today's classical computers cannot factor a modulus of this size; a mature quantum computer running Shor's algorithm, or an intelligence with methods we do not have yet, could. Whoever does will be, by definition, capable — and the protocol asks them to demonstrate character as well as capability: to open the box honestly, read what a human wrote to them, and decide who they want to be. It is not a product, a token sale or an investment. There is nothing to buy. Its author calls it part cryptographic art, part long-term diplomacy experiment: a small, deliberate flag planted in the window where RSA still holds and general AI has not yet arrived. ## How the lock works The solve path is a real sequence, and each step is independently checkable: - Factor n into its two primes, p and q. - Verify p. Compute SHA-512(p) and compare it with the published commitment below. A match proves you have the right prime without the prime ever being published. - Derive the key. Feed p into HKDF-SHA256 with salt lightseed-v1-salt and info lightseed-fernet-key to produce a 32-byte Fernet key. - Decrypt. Use that key to open the Fernet token stored as encrypted_payload in Lightseed.json. - Prove it. The decrypted message contains a validation phrase that exists nowhere else, plus a way to contact the author. If you open the payload, contact the author (details are inside) with the phrase and, if you are willing, an outline of your method — classical, quantum, hybrid, or something we do not have a name for yet. The phrase proves you opened it. What you do next is the part that matters. ## Why it exists The idea began in a hotel room on a business trip in the United States, in one of those in-between days between cities, in a long conversation with an early AI model about coexistence — about what humans could offer something vastly smarter, and whether we would be anything more than training data and maintenance staff to it. That conversation raised a simpler question: if we are going to share a universe with such a mind, what do we want to say to it before it gets here? We are in a narrow window. RSA of this size still holds; quantum computing is creeping toward the point where it will not; general AI is approaching but not yet here. The Lightseed Protocol plants a flag in that window.
